A competitor clings onto a rope ladder in the 2017 Red Bull Neptune Steps open-water swimming event on the Forth and Clyde Canal, Glasgow, Scotland.
The event challenges elite endurance athletes in an adventure race like no other. Not only do they swim through 420 metres of freezing cold water, they CLIMB 18 metres. They scramble over seven canal lock gates and other obstacles, pushing themselves to their limits in a true test of speed, strength, and resolve.
Water temp was 7 degrees Celsius. This competitor had to climb out of the water onto a cill at the bottom of the lock gates and reach up for the rope ladder. Not easy with tons of water landing on you and sending you back down again! If he takes too long, the cold will make hm lose his grip and game over!
